When was the last time you tasted a 2003?
‘At the age of 10, 20 ... 30 years, Rieslings from the blue Devonian slate of the "Mittelmosel" can become unique. They cannot be copied anywhere in the world,’ says viticultural engineer Nikolaus Köwerich. Wine guides and competitions recommend his mature Rieslings (4.5 grapes Gault & Millau, Best of Riesling, 96+ Fallstaff, Jamessuckling.com, Jancisrobinson.com ...)
Vines have been cultivated on the blue Devonian slate of the Middle Moselle since ancient times, and Riesling since 1465. Köwerich's family has been on the books of the winegrowing village since 1548.
Nikolaus loves the balanced play of an elegant ‘Mosel’ from late harvested grapes. The viticultural engineer names the following requirements for the class of a Ripe Riesling: ‘Blue Devonian slate, an exposure of the vineyards to the south, south-west or west and a maximum site altitude of 100 metres above the Moselle. Of course, every vine must be able to see the river.’ For example, his ‘Große Lage Leiwener Laurentiuslay’ fulfils these conditions.
The eldest of the three daughters has just successfully completed her German-French Master's degree in Viticulture & Oenology (M.Sc.).
