About us

The winemakers at Richter believe that great wine comes from the vineyard, not the cellar. With this in mind they strive for precision in their daily viticultural work. The challenge of cultivating vines on the steep, slate slopes of Mosel is overcome by fastidious handwork, small crop sizes, all-natural fertilizers and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, all harvesting is done by hand. Vinification starts with gentle pressing and slow temperature-controlled fermentation in traditional old oak barrels (fuders). This careful, deliberate process preserves the vineyard-grown quality of the grapes, develops the unique character of the single-vineyard cuvees, and to gives Richter wines exceptional longevity as well.

They utilize natural yeasts and eschew chemical fining agents. Max Ferdinand Richter’s 52 steep acres are spreadout in the Middle Mosel Valley between Erden and Brauneberg. Plantings consist of 95% Riesling and 5% Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc grapes. The average age of Richter vines is 45 years

Founded in 1680 as a wine export company, today the estate of Max Ferdinand Richter is owned by the same family that first purchased vineyards in Brauneberg in 1643. The Richter Estate mansion and its Frenchbaroque garden were built in 1774, and the winery premises, built in 1880, boast one of the largest fuder oak barrel wine cellars in the Mosel area. Max Ferdinand Richter is managed and operated by Dr. Dirk Max Ferd. Richter, the ninth generation of his family to do so. The tenth generation – Constantin Max Ferd. Richter – also works at the estate, continuing this strong family tradition.

Still Wine
Champagne & Sparkling Wine

The Max Ferd. Richter winery is known as one of the best producers of Rieslings. The entire spectrum is covered, from light, dry Rieslings to playful, fruity Kabinett wines and the great timeless noble sweet Trockenbeerenauslese wines. In addition, the winery is known for sparkling wines made in the traditional method as well as dry still wines from Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.

Richter Dry Riesling

Classical and typical dry Riesling of the Mosel valley. Precise fruit, fresh and crisp fruit acid. Sourced from the young wines of our Premier Cru vineyards.

Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling GG - Großes Gewächs - dry/trocken

„Grosses Gewächs“ (Grand Cru – corresponds to a dry Auslese) from the best and steepest part in the Juffer – Sonnenuhr vineyard: the „Falkenberg“. Brown and blue slate soil reflect the characteristrics of that precious terroir. Ripe, red vineyard peach, quince and apricot are paired with spicy flavours and ferruginous slate stone minerals. Elegant and very refined, yet with intense length and long lasting finish.

Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Kabinett, feinherb

Fresh, delicate aroma of apple blossoms and a hint of citrus and slate. An animating, enjoyable and juicy Riesling with crystal clear mineral texture; excellent balance of aromatic sweetness and racy fruit acid.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

Ripe, yellow fruit, honey and elegant, floral notes. On palate the taste of pure ripeness and intense mineral notes, so typical for the lean structure and precise character of that terroir.

Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese

Intense complexity! Tight character of juicy wild berries, red currant, quince and ripe pear as well as honey viscosity. Refreshing and breath taking. Great Riesling from our Monopole.
