About us

As a family-run winery, we have been cultivating wine in Weinolsheim (Rheinhessen) since 1625. For 13 generations, we have dedicated ourselves to crafting the perfect bottle of wine.

This dedication includes tasting many wines and engaging in spirited discussions. With two generations and different personalities, we always have a variety of opinions and ideas.
Yet, our shared goal remains clear: wines and sparkling wines that inspire!

Environmental protection and sustainability have always been our top priorities. We firmly believe that only healthy soils can produce wines that authentically and transparently reflect their origins.
In 2022, we took the step of converting to organic viticulture. As the transition takes three years, you will find the EU organic certification (DE-ÖKO-022) on our labels starting in 2025.

Our passion for Rheinhessen wines goes beyond our own winery. Memberships in Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen, the Verband traditioneller Sektmacher, Wein vom Roten Hang, and Generation Riesling reflect our deep connection to the region and our collaborative spirit.

Each year, our ambition is to draw the best from nature's treasures to create unique, characterful wines and sparkling wines for you.
We look forward to meeting you at WINE PARIS / VINEXPO PARIS 2025!

Franziska Gröhl (left) and Johannes Gröhl (right) – The two siblings jointly run the Gröhl Winery in Weinolsheim as the 13th generation.

Franziska and Johannes together with their parents Angela and Eckehart Gröhl (12th generation) in the "Pettenthal" vineyard in Nierstein.

Before joining the family winery, Johannes studied Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Geisenheim, which included a stay abroad in South Africa. Prior to this, he completed his training as a winemaker at the Rings Winery (Pfalz), Philipp Kuhn (Pfalz), and Matthias Knebel (Mosel).

Before joining the family winery, Franziska completed a degree in International Wine Business at the University of Geisenheim. Additionally, she is active in the wine world beyond the confines of the winery. Among other roles, she served as the Rheinhessian Wine Princess in 2019/2020.

Within a radius of approximately 30 kilometers around Weinolsheim, the vines grow on diverse soils, including loam-loess soils (Weinolsheim / Dalheim), limestone soils (Oppenheim; Nierstein-Hölle), and red clay sandstone (Nierstein-Roter Hang). This diversity makes the wines especially rich in aromas and mineral complexity.

In the vineyard, we have always valued cover crops. In winter, they protect against the leaching of nitrates in the soil. In spring, they create a habitat for beneficial insects and many other organisms that are crucial for good biodiversity in the vineyard. Many of the cover crops also begin to bloom, providing a food source for bees and bumblebees. Once the plants have finished blooming, we roll them over. This creates a natural cover over the soil, protecting it from drying out. Finally, the cover crops, through decomposition by microorganisms, contribute to natural humus formation, improved water retention, and soil structure.

Only from delicious and healthy grapes can great wines be made! Throughout the year, many actions are taken in the vineyard to improve quality. This includes tasks such as pruning the vines, removing double shoots, thinning the grapes, and halving the clusters. In the autumn, we traditionally harvest a large portion of our vineyards by hand in order to perfectly select the grapes. Often, we also go through the vineyard multiple times, picking only the ripe grapes.

Once in the cellar, we place great importance on spontaneous fermentation with the wine's own yeasts. For white wines, this takes place both in stainless steel as well as in barrique and small barrels. The so-called micro-oxidation is what characterizes the maturation in wooden barrels. This is a quality-enhancing process of the wine that emphasizes the wine's own aromas. Our red wines undergo fermentation on the skins, which is known as maceration fermentation. Afterward, they mature in barrique and small barrels. After fermentation, each wine is given as much time as it needs. Many white wines are only released after 14 months, and many red wines after 24 months.

The traditional bottle fermentation requires a lot of time and manual labor, allowing us to produce exceptional sparkling wines. The secondary fermentation takes place traditionally in-house. After a maturation period of 24 to 40 months on the lees, the sparkling wine bottles are hand-riddled and disgorged.

Our mission is to harness the very best of nature's treasures every year, crafting unique, character-driven wines and sparkling wines for you. The success of our work is reflected in the many accolades we've received in recent years. Johannes was nominated for the "Rising Star of 2022" by the Vinum Wine Guide for the Rheinhessen region, Falsaff crowned him "Newcomer of the Year 2023," and Gault & Millau awarded him the title "Next Generation – The Young Wine Talents of Germany 2024.
